Prison is much more difficult: the problems of the tennis stars make Becker smile wearily

Boris Becker does not understand the behavior of some tennis players on the ATP tour.

Former tennis player Boris Becker (55) can barely suppress a laugh when he talks about the little things that tennis players complain about these days, without ever having spent a lifetime in prison. Only then would they realize the privileges they enjoy on the ATP tour.

The German must know. He got to know both parties firsthand. First as a six-time Grand Slam winner on the tennis scene, before serving an eight-month prison sentence in England in April 2022 for insolvency crimes.

Becker speaks to the conscience of tennis players

Since his release, Becker has spoken several times about his difficult time behind bars, where he feared for his life because he was surrounded by killers. He will never forget that, he says. This is also why he finds the behavior of some professional players a bit strange.

«When I hear players complain about the pressure they feel on a break point, I have to laugh. When I hear players complain about the quality of the lounge food, I have to laugh. When I hear players complain about the training and the conditions on the fields, I have to laugh.” It doesn’t mean anything if you spend a while in jail. The first and last night you won’t sleep for a second, Becker told L’Equipe.

But the time is over now. Top 10 player Holger Rune (20) recently hired him as a coach. Since then, things have been going well again for the Dane, who was in poor form at the time. He reached the semi-finals at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. At the Paris Masters, Rune’s run ended with a narrow 5:7, 7:6, 4:6 defeat to Novak Djokovic (36) in the quarterfinals. (Gentlemen)
