The hierarchy of Swiss goalkeepers: the old guard is still there

With Zug goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni in goal, the national team won all six matches last season. In the World Cup quarter-finals against Germany, the seven-time champion goalkeeper was alone on the bench.

The old Nati guard

Leonardo Genoni (36, Zug, 75 international matches). In the World Cup quarter-final against Germany, he was not the first choice in a knockout match for the first time since 2015. In retrospect, a mistake. But the seven-time champion goalkeeper has not had enough and has extended his contract with EVZ for three years.

Reto Berra (36, Fribourg, 70 LS). Back in the national team. He survived last season’s back surgery well. The two-time World Cup silver hero, who was in goal against Finland (0-4) on Thursday, has also signed a new contract (until 2026).

Ten seconds before the end: Berra achieves victory with a windmill parade(00:35)

Robert Mayer (34, Napkin, 18 LS). In the spring he was on a high: champion and number 1 of the national team in the quarter-finals, where he was responsible for the 0-1 defeat against Germany. He is still struggling this season (87.16% save percentage, 3.39 goals conceded per game).

Duped by a long shot: Gross Mayer’s blunder leads to bankruptcy(00:28)

The NHL goalie

Akira Schmid (23, New Jersey). Currently number 2 again for the Devils, after they displaced competitor Vanecek in the spring and became the play-off hero against arch-rival New York Rangers.

The Crown Princes

Joren van Pottelberghe (26, Biel, 9LS). Made his first World Cup appearance in the spring in the thankless final group match against host nation Latvia (3:4 nV), when Nati coach Fischer rested players. Moves to Lugano next season.

Connor Hughes (27, Lausanne, 3LS). Last season, when Berra was injured, he was the shooting star for Fribourg. And also a bench in goal at Lausanne before he got injured.

Sandro Aeschlimann (28, Davos, 8LS). He made a mistake in his only World Cup appearance so far in 2022 (3-2 against Kazakhstan). At HCD, his performance is consistently strong.

Melvin Nyffeler (28, SCRJ Lakers, 10LS). The fact that Rappi is playing below his potential for the first time since promotion in 2018 does not help Nyffeler. During his two World Cup appearances in 2021, he missed out on promotion for himself.

Disgraced crown princes

Gilles Senn (27, Davos, 8LS). Overshadowed by Aeschlimann. After HCD has signed Hollenstein for next season, he has to look for a new club.

Gauthier Descloux (27, Napkin, 5 LS). Got hurt too many times. And in the playoffs, Mayer took the No. 1 spot away from him en route to the title.

Philip Wuthrich (25, Bern, 3LS). Relegated to number 2 at SCB. At Reideborn a high-profile foreigner was placed in front of him. Currently injured.

Ludovic Waeber (27, Charlotte, 4LS). At ZSC, strong foreigners (first Kovar, then Hrubec) were in front of him. Now he’s trying out the AHL.

The hopeful people

Luca Hollenstein (23, train). So much for Genoni’s backup. From next season he will be a competitor of Aeschlimann in the wind at Davos.

Stephane Charlin (23, SCL Tigers). Spectacular parades are his trademark. Can take a beating, but is becoming increasingly consistent.

Kevin Pasche (20, Lausanne). What a debut! Used the Hughes injury to catch up with Ponnenovs. 5 games, 4 wins, 93.8 percent save percentage.

Ewan Hoet (18, Regina). The U20 national team goalkeeper and son of Cristobal Huet immediately established himself in the North American junior league WHL.

The veterans

Niklas Schlegel (29, Lugano, 3LS). Displaced Koskinen as number 1.

Luca Boltshauser (30, SCL Tigers, 3 LS). Currently injured again.

Damiano Ciaccio (34, Ajoie). Currently playing stronger than ever.

Tim Wolf (31, Ajoie, 1LS). Moves to Zug as a replacement for Genoni.

Benjamin Conz (32, Ambri, 13LS). Relieves Juvonen with a strong performance.

Sandro Zürkirchen (33, Kloten, 7LS). Only played 4 times this season due to a knee injury.

Daniel Manzato (39, Bern, 34LS). Could still be used due to Wüthrich’s injury.

The NL students

Robin Zumbühl (24, ZSC Leeuwen). Take advantage of the opportunity to replace Hrubec, who was released by Jeffrey Meier’s injury.

Robin Meijer (23, SCRJ Lakers). Meets the requirements of a number 2.

Bryan Ruegger (23, Fribourg). Berra leaves a few crumbs lying around. So he could only show what he can do four times.
