New collective bargaining agreement in force: 400 francs more pay for Swiss cabin crew

There have been intense and difficult negotiations between the cabin crew union (Kapers) and Switzerland since June. An agreement was reached a few weeks ago, but it was only a declaration of intent. Details were finalized later.

They are available now. The collective bargaining agreement 2024 (GAV24) offers a wage increase of 400 francs per month for all employees. “This corresponds to an average wage of between 11 and 18 percent higher, depending on seniority,” Kapers President Sandrine Nikolic-Fuss told Blick.

There are also significantly expanded additional compensation. In the future, everyone should be paid at least half of the 13th month’s salary starting from the third year of service. Additional achievements include more attractive transition provisions at retirement age, as well as greater staff stability and therefore better planning of one’s private life. When it comes to expenses, cabin crew will finally be treated on equal terms with pilots.

Swiss, on the other hand, writes that it will invest 200 million francs in the working conditions of flight attendants over the next five years (the usual period of the CLA). The contract also includes a two percent wage increase to compensate for inflation, which has been in place since January 1, 2023.

GAV still needs to be adopted

“Swiss cabin crew have had difficult years,” says Nikolic-Fuss. It was time for “decent wages and better working conditions”.

Cabin crew were ultimately still traveling on GAV15, as GAV19 never emerged as a result of the pandemic and the originally planned GAV23 was resoundingly rejected in the spring.

Nikolic-Fuss is pleased with the negotiation outcome: “It’s by no means perfect, but it’s a big step in the right direction.” Around 2,700 Kapers members based in Zurich and Geneva are now called to vote by 19 December. A two-thirds majority is required for GAV to be adopted.

If accepted, the new collective bargaining agreement will come into force on January 1, 2024.
