“He is brutally honest with us”

For Xhaka, Leverkusen’s success can mainly be explained by Alonso’s eager attitude. The Catalan has instilled a winning gene in the team and wants to continuously develop his team. “The coach immediately takes us to task when we give up. He is brutally honest with us. That is very important for us at this stage when everyone is praising us,” Xhaka explains.

«It’s not that easy to keep your feet on the ground when you’re constantly hearing how good you are. The coach ensures that we organize everything correctly.” Xhaka knows that the team also feels the hunger that Alonso exemplifies. “He’s very focused and hungry. We feel that his thoughts are only with us and that he wants to be successful with us.”

“I haven’t reached my limit yet”

Alonso not only has a huge positive influence on the attitude of the team. But he also works closely with the individual players. Xhaka in particular, who, like the former Real star, plays in defensive midfield, can learn a lot from him.

“Xabi was one of the best players in the world in his position. I’m lucky that I can play in this central midfield position like him. He gives me important tips for certain game situations, body language and positioning. I take a lot from him. I am 31, but not yet at my limit.” Xabi, the Xhaka supporter, is the man who knows how to get the best out of the Nati captain. Switzerland will be grateful to him. (sbe)
