The San Jose Sharks present a pathetic picture. Most recently they suffered two losses: 1:10 against the Vancouver Canucks with goal scorer Pius Suter and 2:10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The balance after the first eleven games of the season? Eleven defeats, one point and a goal difference of -43.
The league’s historians are already pondering which NHL team was the worst in history, looking for the equivalent of Tasmania Berlin (two wins in 34 games in 1965-66) in the Bundesliga or Derby County (one win in …38 games in 2007/08) in the Premier League.
They ran into the Washington Capitals, who won just eight times in 80 games in their first season in 1974-75. Coach Jim Anderson had to resign at the time. Not just because he couldn’t do it, but because he had a stomach ulcer that was probably caused by stress.
The New York Rangers had the worst start and started the 1943/44 season with 15 defeats – although at that time there was no possibility of winning in penalty shootouts. Ultimately, they achieved six wins (in 50 games).
It was expected that the Sharks would be bad, in a way that was a given. Because the Californians had decided on a hard ‘reconstruction’. They then qualified for the play-offs again. However, the damage could no longer be repaired.
It will likely be a long time before the Sharks are competitive again. And while they regularly fill the hut, their stadium is empty.
