Famous and successful tennis mothers: “My life only began when I became a mother”

It is not yet known what Belinda Bencic (26) and her partner Martin Hromkovic (41) plan for their family future. The woman from eastern Switzerland has spoken openly in the past about the possibility of imagining returning to the tennis tour as a mother. One thing is clear: many top players have already done this to her. And they often amazed people with their performances.

The longtime tennis dominator and 23-time Grand Slam winner is the most prominent example among tennis moms. Although the American was again denied a major title after the birth of her first daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., she still reached the finals four times. In 2022, she announced her retirement from professional sports, followed in the summer of 2023 by her second daughter: Adira River Ohanian.

This year she created a comeback fairytale. The Ukrainian, married to tennis professional Gaël Monfils (37), gave birth to the girl Skai in October 2022. Just six months later she celebrated her return to the tour – and even won the WTA 250 tournament in Strasbourg in May. “I will never forget my first title as a mother,” Switolina proudly told Tennis Channel. A little later she surprised herself by reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. And most importantly: with their run to the Wimbledon semi-finals.

“My life only began when I became a mother,” Viktoria Asarenka once said. The Belarusian, who previously won the Australian Open twice, has been traveling around the world with her son Leo (6) since 2018. She is currently number 22 in the world and in 2020 she also reached the final of the US Open. She says: “It doesn’t end there, as a mother you can have professional goals and dreams. That’s the message I want to send to other mothers: they should be able to do what they want.”

The former world number one from Denmark won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2018. Two years later, she played her last match at the same venue before taking a mommy break. Wozniacki has now given birth to two children (Oliva and James) and made her comeback this year after more than three years. She reached the eighth finals of the US Open.

The four-time Grand Slam winner canceled her participation in the Australian Open earlier this year before announcing her pregnancy. Their daughter Shai was born in July. A little later, the Japanese announced that she planned to make her comeback at the Australian Open next January.

She should also be at the start again in Melbourne. The German, who has been on break since July 2022, aims to return to the professional tour this year – she could play at the United Cup in Perth and Sydney (from December 29 to January 7). Kerber became mother to her first daughter Liana in February.
