Marc Berthod will compete as a celebrity pusher in the final of the 7th Swiss Slide Championships on November 18.

You have celebrated countless successes in your career as a ski racer. Should we also pay attention to you when hunting?
Marc Berthod: I really hope so! I’m really looking forward to participating in the Swiss Sliding Championships. I would like to place certain accents. My heart as an athlete is still there, and the ambition certainly comes when I sit at the Jass table.

When and where did you learn to play Jasmine?
My father taught me when I was about six or seven years old. He didn’t exempt me like other people (laughs).

Then who took the money from your pocket?
My former colleagues in the ski circus. We often played poker and gambled together. Preferably the pusher or hairdresser. It cost about 50 francs each. I had to withdraw money from the ATM during the game to continue playing. I was never overly good, but I could get through it. The older generation excluded me at the beginning of my career, but luckily I got better and better over the years.

Swiss ski stars Daniel Albrecht, Didier Cuche, Marc Berthod and Didier Défago (from left) with the Jassen in 2008.

Which ski cracks did you enjoy playing with?
Tobias Grünenfelder and Beat Feuz are very good Jassers. Just like on skis, they always had an ace up their sleeve. It was always a fun round with Daniel Albrecht, Didier Cuche and Didier Défago.

Would you consider yourself a good hunting partner?
I’m a quirky yesser. I often try something and am willing to take risks. Not everyone likes that.

Are you someone who sometimes shouts?
No. I like to create spells and try to lure and distract my opponents from their reserve. I’m also a bit happy when things don’t go well for my opponent. I like teasing. Especially when I notice that it irritates the person I’m talking to (laughs).

Are you a good loser?
In the short term, of course, it bothers me. Who likes to lose? But because I’ve lost enough times in my life, I know how to deal with it. There is a minor annoyance, but it doesn’t last long.

On what occasions will you take out the Jass cards today?
I enjoy hunting with my three children. As my father taught me, I passed the slider on to them.

How do you rate your chances at the 7th Swiss Slide Championships?
I’m optimistic I’ll finish in the first third. If not, I’d be disappointed. I hope for luck and good hunting partners.

Do you prepare specifically for the final day?
I actually planned to start cold, like golf. This usually works better than if you train a lot in advance.
