Australia has decided not to participate in the 2034 World Cup, finally clearing the way for Saudi Arabia. As the last possible competitor of the desert state, the Australian association decided not to register its interest in organizing the tournament with the world association FIFA shortly before the deadline.

“We have explored the possibility of applying to host the World Cup and, after considering all factors, have concluded that we will not do so in 2034,” Football Australia said. Any applicants had until Tuesday to confirm their interest.

Clear the way for Saudi Arabia

Except for Saudi Arabia, which has been criticized for human rights violations, among other things, no one has dared to take cover. The final application must be submitted no later than July 2024. There is little doubt that Saudi Arabia will win the contract.

Recently, Indonesia rejected its plans for a joint application with Australia and other countries, and more and more countries are gradually siding with Saudi Arabia. The Asian confederation AFC announced its support for the extremely wealthy kingdom shortly after the rise of Saudi Arabia.

Critics accuse FIFA, led by President Gianni Infantino, of paving the way for controversial Saudi ruler Mohammed bin Salman by planning the 2030 World Cup in six countries and three continents. In 2034, due to the rotation principle, only organizers from Asia and Oceania are eligible; FIFA wants to award the tournament at the end of next year.
