Top favorite Holger Rune (r.) is out – Felix Auger-Aliassime marches towards defending his title.

Even the calm, cool Canadian was surprised by the primal scream that Felix Auger-Aliassime (23) let out last year after winning the title in Basel. “Normally I don’t show much emotion after a win, but here it all came out after the match point,” he said afterwards. Now the world number 19 is just one match away from another emotional outburst. Auger-Aliassime defeated top seed Holger Rune (20) 6:3, 6:2 in the semi-finals.

The calm man from Montreal seems the opposite of his opponent, who was named the biggest bully in tennis in the Italian sports bible ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ this spring. The feisty Rune repeatedly loses his cool in a duel with Auger-Aliassime. Sometimes he swears, sometimes he throws his hands away. He achieves too little, and too little can be seen in the ‘Becker effect’ of the past few days.

After star trainer Boris Becker (55) sat down in his box for the first time in Basel, the young Dane finally seemed to turn things around. After three months, the St. Jakobshalle responded to the long slump with only one victory. But in the semi-finals there is only a gentle breeze left from the rune storm that has arisen.

Auger-Aliassime’s convincing performance regularly causes Rune and his chest to despair. The defending champion can also look back on very difficult months with a series of first round defeats, but he is clearly more confident and efficient than his counterpart. The Basel audience appreciates this – they have learned to appreciate Auger-Aliassime’s nonchalant style. The right-hander celebrates his ninth Basel victory in a row against Rune.

The recent successes will do him good. After this bad season with nine starting defeats since April (!), he should shout for joy again if he beats the in-form Pole Hubert Hurkacz (26) in the final. Auger-Aliassime nods with a smile and says: “We still have to wait and see about this game, but yes, there is already some relief on the horizon.”
