15th place in the Bundesliga, not yet a point in the Champions League, nine defeats in a row. The balance sheet of Union Berlin, which has been so successful in recent years, is shocking. Yet Mario Basler (54) still believes that Swiss coach Urs Fischer (57) is the right person for the job.
“He has been steadily improving for four or five years. Now it’s going the other way. The only goal for him and Union is to stay in the Bundesliga this year,” the former Bayern professional explained to Sport1.
Basler is confident that the Iron Men will hold the Swiss. “They recognized the signs of the times early and remained completely calm. Talking about the coach is out of the question at Union.”
Even in the event of relegation, the 54-year-old believes Fischer will stay. “I think they would go to the second division with him if necessary. What he and the club have achieved in recent years is à la bonne heure.”
The German sees Union’s location as a disadvantage in the premier class. “Of course the many spectators are nice, but it is certainly a disadvantage that they do not play their matches in their own stadium. I think they would have scored a point or two in the kettle. Union will not play its Champions League home matches in the Alte Försterei as usual, but in the Olympic Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 70,000 places.
Groundbreaking weeks are ahead for Union Berlin. On Saturday (3.30 pm), Fischer’s team will face Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, who are level on points. With a victory, the Iron Men, and Fischer himself, could get some breathing room again. (mab)
