Melting subglaciers are one of the risk tipping points, according to a new report from the United Nations University in Bonn. (archive image)

The “Interconnected Disaster Risks” report, published on Wednesday, highlights six risk areas.

So one of the areas is species extinction. Additionally, more groundwater is being withdrawn than is naturally replenished, according to the report. Other areas of risk include melting glaciers, increasing space debris, unbearable temperatures for humans and the loss of insurability of buildings, for example, as increasingly serious disasters increase insurance costs.

Zita Sebesvari, the lead author of the report, said in a statement to the German Press Agency that humanity is close to the tipping points of these risks. According to the report, a tipping point is reached when a system can no longer reduce risks.
