Legendary trainer Frehsner (84) explains the secret of Gut-Behrami (32): “It is important, but not always pleasant for everyone.”

As brilliant as she is at skiing, she is also very annoying: Lara Gut-Behrami (32). This brings admiration from some, while others shake their heads. The fact is: the Ticino woman is already one of the greatest Swiss drivers in history. On Saturday she wants to achieve her third victory after 2013 and 2016 on the Rettenbach Glacier above Sölden (Austria) at the season opener – she is our trump card.

For legendary trainer Karl Frehsner (84), it is no surprise that Gut-Behrami is still at the top, even 15 years after her debut. “She will still be fighting for victory in 2033,” he jokes.

Then “Iron Karl” gets serious: “Lara is still very good. Why? Because she doesn’t say: now it will be another year. No, she is someone who always looks where things can be improved. She doubts everything and doesn’t sleep through anything. That is extremely important, but not always pleasant for everyone.”

Sleeping, eating, skiing – nothing else

All? By this, Frehsner not only means the association, but also her team and even her family. Gut-Behrami confirms: “If I am still skiing at 32 and 33, it is because I make conscious and decisive decisions. I’m quite radical.”

She is happy that the people around her accept this and help her, the Ticino resident said. The shared free time sometimes falls by the wayside. Sleeping, eating, skiing – Gut-Behrami is ready to subordinate everything to everyday life. “My priority is to stay healthy and ride well all season. I want to translate my work into good results.”

Frehsner also believes she can do great things in the downhill

Gut-Behrami has another great quality in Sölden: unlike many of her competitors, the first race of the winter does not make her nervous. She has been through too much for that and is already in the middle of life.

Frehsner thinks Gut-Behrami can also beat downhill queen Sofia Goggia (30, It) this season. “Why not?” he asks rhetorically. Although Gut-Behrami has disadvantages in the sliding sections due to her weight, she can eliminate them in the corners. “She doesn’t have to travel on the Goggia line, she has to do her own thing.”

Frehsner is confident Gut-Behrami will do this. And how long will she keep driving? “Lara doesn’t just go along, she wants to win. When she can no longer do this, she will stop.”

For now, this seems far away. As a reminder, Gut-Behrami stood on the podium nine times last winter and won three times. And she got the super-G crystal ball. Sölden can come.
