Imagine Real Madrid and last year’s finalists Inter Milan not playing in the men’s Champions League this season – not even in Europe. It would be unthinkable, but something similar is currently happening in the Women’s Champions League.
For the premier class you have to survive a maximum of three qualifying rounds. This year, last year’s finalists Wolfsburg, last year’s semi-finalists Arsenal, as well as Manchester United and Juventus failed because of these hurdles. This causes a wave of outrage.
Two years ago, UEFA introduced the new qualifying mode, in which 16 teams can advance to the group stage. Only the champion clubs from France, Spain, Germany and England are directly qualified. In qualifying, the remaining national champions play seven tickets for the group stage among themselves. For example, the FCZ women, who failed against national champion Ajax Amsterdam (total score 0:8). But there are also matches between Rosengard and Spartak Subotica or Cluj against Slavia Prague.
The ‘non-champions’ play for the last five tickets for the group stage of the premier class. Hammer duels are inevitable. This season, Arsenal, Wolfsburg, PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester United were among the players in this pot. Only the lottery fee determines whether you meet BK Häcken or PSG.
The elimination of Arsenal in particular has a bitter aftertaste. The English women have by far the highest average number of spectators in the Super League with 45,000 per match. The professional team, in which the Swiss Lia Wälti and Noelle Maritz also play, also misses out on an income of about one million euros. Manchester United coach Marc Skinner said after the exit: “It’s crazy that we have to play PSG in qualifying. The best teams should be playing in the Champions League, not a series of average clubs.”
It is clear that the current qualification format applies until the 2024/2025 season. We will probably have to do without top international clubs in the Champions League next year.
