Actually, everything is ready for a handball party in the Kriens Krauerhalle. 800 fans turn the mini-arena into a madhouse, Kriens-Luzern with former Bundesliga superstar Andy Schmid (40) meets Bundesliga team Hannover-Burgdorf in the first European League group match in the club’s history.

But then, shortly before the throw-off, an annoying blunder occurs. For one of the goals, the throwing circle on one side of the field is too wide: it is seven meters away from the goal instead of six.

You need to know: During the European Handball Cup, LED boards are set up for every match and in every room and a light blue floor is laid for the uniform appearance on TV. It consists of square pieces that are clicked together.

Correction of the floor slabs in record time

When laying the temporary floor, the people from Central Switzerland apparently slipped by a meter in one spot. The incredible thing: the delegates of the European Association EHF checked and inspected the playing field with a laser device. And the players don’t notice the mega glitch during warm-up either.

At first, those responsible for the club are shocked: can the problem be solved within a reasonable time or should the match even be cancelled? But then the group of helpers in front of the sold-out stands really steps on the gas. In just fifteen minutes, Kriens-Luzern manages to correctly reposition the square meters of plates.

Ex-Schmid trainer bridges the waiting time with an interview

The waiting audience is entertained in a different way: Danish national coach Nikolaj Jacobsen, previously coach of Andy Schmid at Rhein-Neckar Löwen for many years, is there and gives an impromptu interview.

Then we left 17 minutes late. Outsiders Kriens-Luzern kept track of the Bundesliga club until halftime, after which, despite eight goals from Schmid, it ended in the expected Swiss defeat: 23:31.

Kriens-Luzern spokesperson Daniel Frank told Blick: “Despite the disruption, it was a great celebration. Now, in retrospect, we can laugh again about the incorrectly laid floor. There are worse things in the world.”
