There is no perfect time to meet for the first time after a close relationship has ended. For EVZ coach Dan Tangnes (44) and HCD head coach Josh Holden (45), the time has come after a month of the new season. After five years of standing next to each other, they face each other on the board for the first time.
Tangnes was Holden’s teacher; As an assistant to the Norwegian, the Swiss-Canadian became champion twice. The two coaches continue to maintain their friendship and regularly exchange information – even just before this first match. “We used the mandatory referee meeting as an opportunity,” Tangnes says with a smile, “but we spoke as friends, not as coaches of the opponents.” This first meeting was very special, “for him, for me, but also for some players,” said Tangnes. “Martschini, for example, has spent the last eleven years with Josh.”
The match becomes a lesson in efficiency for Holden. At the time of the 4-0 lead, Zug barely made ten shots at the HCD goal. His teacher still gets a hug after the defeat.
It clicked. Lugano has been playing grande lately. Thanks to the parade storm that was newly formed two games ago with center and captain Calvin Thürkauf (26), Daniel Carr (31, Ka) and Michael Joly (28, Ka), the SCB (2:5) and the SCL Tigers (0: 8) have no chance. The trio scored a whopping 18 scoring points (8 goals/10 assists) this weekend. Since Joly became the second winger next to Thürkauf and Carr, they have been high flyers.
21-year-old Marco Zanetti previously played in his place. Coach Luca Gianinazzi (30) also had Thürkauf run between Marco Müller (29) and Lorenzo Canonica (20). But never before have things clicked as well as with the current top strike trio. And: “We have learned from our mistakes,” says Joly on MySports.
There was hope that the SCL Tigers would not be far behind at the bottom of the table early in the season. They scored points in five straight games and recorded three wins. This after they had to record a horror goal difference of 9:29 after five games.
When asked about the drastic change, coach Thierry Paterlini initially had no clear answer. Instead, he speculated that the team had grown closer due to the many absences due to illness. But the 48-year-old also raised his warning finger and – since he was still ignorant – demonstrated his abilities as a clairvoyant.
He said midweek: “We will suffer defeats again. That’s part of a long season.” However, Paterlini did not have to wait long. His team refused to defend his duty in the 0:8 home defeat on Saturday. The ZSC Lions – they won 3-0 against Langnau the night before – were shown what was possible without sitting back (again).
