Before important European Championship qualifiers: The Dutch national team has almost no players left

Dutch football is in a sickbed these days. Just before the important qualifying matches for the 2024 European Championship against France and Greece, the Dutch football soul is experiencing unusually turbulent times.

There is the drama in the national competition: Eredivisie model club and record champion Ajax Amsterdam is in total chaos after the worst start to the season since 1965 and has recently made a name for itself with ugly fan riots. And the Dutch national team is also having a hard time.

The Greeks on your back

There are game-changing matches in the European Championship qualifiers, although failure is absolutely possible. While first place is likely to be given to France, the battle for the second qualifying spot remains neck and neck with the Greeks, who have the same number of points. But the signs are anything but rosy.

No fewer than twelve players are currently out of the Dutch national team due to injury or illness. This includes greats such as defender Matthijs De Ligt (24), midfield strategist Frenkie De Jong (26) and goalscorer Memphis Depay (29). Not a dream scenario for coach Ronald Koeman (60).

A failure would probably mean the end for Koeman as national coach. And it would also be a bitter setback for fans after the run to the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar. (Gentlemen)
