It wasn’t about the top spots in La Liga. But Sevilla and Valencia played for the Champions League final on Tuesday night. After almost fourteen (!) minutes of stoppage time, the game in Andalusia ended 1-1. And then everything was anything but calm.
Sevilla and Valencia traditionally belong to the Spanish elite, but things have not been going so well for either of them this season. Valencia started the game as number eight in La Liga.
When Edinson Cavani headed in to make it 1-0 after just six minutes, Sevilla seemed in for another tough evening. But the home side stood up, attacked passionately and were rewarded with five minutes remaining: Erick Lamela smashed the superb Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from a header from Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Then the spectacle really started.
Cheered on by coach Jorge Sampaoli, Sevilla threw everything into the fray in search of the winning goal. Valencia had to survive until substitute Justin Kluivert stole the ball from a corner from Jesús Navas and went on his own after the break.
However, just before the penalty area, Kluivert was kicked by Papu Gómez. Kluivert got up quickly and tried to pass the ball to team-mate Mouctar Diakhaby, who in turn received a powerful shove in the back from Sevilla defender Kike Salas.
Referee César Soto gave Gómez a red card for the emergency stop, but left it to the VAR to decide whether to continue the attack. He decided differently: Gómez’s red card became a yellow card, Salas was sent off in his place and Valencia were allowed to build up from eleven meters in the 112th minute.
So did José Luis Gayà, but Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou (aka Bono) became the hero of the night. He completed Gayà’s attempt from the corner with style and saved a point after a crazy final phase.
