What was expected is now a fact: Israel’s European Championship qualifier away to Kosovo on Sunday evening has been cancelled. UEFA announced this on Thursday morning.
The Israeli association had announced that the players would not be available due to the war in Israel. Chairman Shino Zoertz also emphasized that they would not compete “even under duress.” One reason for the cancellation is likely the fact that Israeli citizens are currently not allowed to leave the country.
It is not clear whether the match can be played in November, the last meeting before the European Championship qualification. Due to the postponement of the match against Switzerland (new on November 15), Israel would have to play four matches in the ten-day international period. However, that is not possible.
Postponing the game to winter or spring would create many scheduling conflicts. The draw for the play-off round will take place on November 23. UEFA should therefore introduce a placeholder for third place in the Swiss group and also reschedule the play-off match.
Israel is currently in third place in the Swiss Group I and is therefore in the race for a place at the European Championship. It would be the first time that the country can participate in a European Championship. (ch)
