Bayer Leverkusen spent 35.5 million euros this summer to sign Granit Xhaka (31) and Victor Boniface (22). An investment that has paid off for the Werkself so far.
Boniface scored seven goals and prepared two, and Xhaka is convincing as the boss in midfield. Both have done their part to ensure that Leverkusen is still undefeated and top of the table after seven rounds.
As “Sportbild” reports, the duo almost ended up with a league competitor. Borussia Dortmund was therefore offered. But BVB refused.
With Nati captain Xhaka the total package would have been too expensive. He has signed with Leverkusen until 2028. Including the transfer fee, it will cost the club around 50 million euros. But in the end it was not so much that this spoke against a commitment to BVB, but rather against Xhaka’s age. At the end of the contract he is 35 years old and has little resale value. That’s how he ended up in Leverkusen.
BVB also did not want Boniface in its ranks. The Nigerian was offered to the club last spring. Sébastien Haller (29) showed strong performances after his cancer, so no action was necessary. That changed after the summer holidays. Haller could not maintain his level. And BVB needed attacking reinforcements. Only: Boniface was now off the market.
So the club had to look elsewhere. And instead Felix Nmecha (23) and Niclas Füllkrug (30) signed. While the former has so far remained below expectations, Füllkrug has already scored at least two goals this season. And left Dortmund just two points behind the leader in fourth place. Nevertheless, if you look at Leverkusen you might be a little annoyed that you didn’t get Xhaka and Boniface. (beer)
