No matches at Old Trafford: Euro 2028 will be played in these stadiums

It is official. The 2028 European Championship returns Back to the motherland of football. The final in about five years’ time could be one for football romantics. Blick shows the stadiums in which the football festival will take place.

The city of Glasgow is indispensable without Hampden Park. Since 1867, matches have been played in the historic stadium with space for 51,866 spectators.

Most Welsh residents in Cardiff know the rugby and football stadium that opened in 1999 as the Millenium Stadium. But since a sponsorship deal in 2016, it has been renamed the Principality Stadium. It offers space for 73,931 spectators.

In addition to the home matches of the national rugby and football teams, the Leinster Rugby team welcomes their opponents to the 51,700-seat Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Since its opening in 2010, the annual FAI Cup final has also taken place here.

In five years’ time the game will actually be played here at European Championship level – Casement Park in Belfast (Northern Ireland), opened in 1953, was home to Gaelic club Antrim GAA. The stadium has not been in use for ten years, but must now be rebuilt in time for the European Championships in five years’ time. The result: a modern stadium with a capacity of 34,000 spectators.

As expected, the 2028 European champions will receive the trophy at Wembley in London, England’s largest stadium. The 16-year-old stadium can accommodate around 90,000 spectators.

Aston Villa usually plays their home games at Villa Park. The first match took place in 1897 between Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers (3-0). The stadium in Birmingham offers access to 42,657 spectators.

Since the Champions League match between Newcastle United and Paris St. Germain, the 121-year-old St. James’ Park in Newcastle has been known to every football fan. At the time, 52,000 spectators in the sold-out stadium created an unforgettable atmosphere.

For ten years, nowhere else has the Premier League title been celebrated as often as at the 53,400-seat Etihad Stadium in Manchester. The stadium opened in 2022 for an athletics event. Manchester City played their first football match against FC Barcelona in 2003.

Another stadium that is still under construction or not yet finished. The new Everton Stadium in Liverpool is expected to open at the start of the 2024/25 season and will eventually replace Goodison Park, which opened in 1892, as the new home of Everton FC. The new audience capacity: 52,888.

Just a few years ago, Tottenham Hotspur played at White Hart Lane. The Spurs have been running on the field in the newly built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London with 62,850 spectators for four years now.
