We Weren’t Swiss!: Who Invented Jackets Anyway?

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

Coats are as much a part of Switzerland as chocolate, cheese and mountains. You often hear a Jass at the regular table, at grandma’s or on the train. The slider is the most popular type, but the difference maker and hairdresser are also assets for many. But how did the Jass cards actually find their way to our country?

Playing cards have their origins in Asia. They probably originated in Korea and China in the 12th century. From there they first conquered India and Persia before finally reaching Europe. However, playing cards were banned in many places because the money involved increased gambling debts. However, Italy and France were responsible for the disease still spreading in Europe.

Jackets replaced Tarot

In the 18th century, Protestant mercenaries from the Netherlands and Belgium brought the Jass with 36 cards as we know it today to Switzerland. The game quickly became popular in this country and replaced the tarot, which was brought to our country by mercenaries from Italy.

In the Netherlands, Jassen figuratively means: to be in a hurry, to be in a hurry, to work diligently and quickly. The name of the game comes from the highest card, the “Yes”. This is the name of the trump farmer in Dutch. But the ‘Nell’, the trump nine, is also reminiscent of Dutch origins.

The oldest Swiss evidence of Jassen dates back to 1796. Two preachers from Schaffhausen sued two farmers who were playing a game called Jassen for a glass of wine.

The Röstigraben of the Jasskarten

In Switzerland there is a so-called card ditch. French maps are mainly used in French-speaking Switzerland, Bern, Solothurn, Basel, Valais, Aargau, Ticino and along Lake Constance in Thurgau. In the other regions, German cards end up on the Jass carpet.

The taxation of playing cards in France has contributed to Swiss card theft. When this came up in the 18th century, map makers emigrated to the Swiss Confederation. No such tax was levied in this country. The French map images produced here eventually spread to western Switzerland.
