Anyone who can only shake their heads at this development is Infantino’s predecessor. Sepp Blatter (87) was president of the association from 1998 to 2016. He told SonntagsBlick: “It is absurd to break up the tournament in this way.” During his time, the World Cup also took place in several countries, including South Korea and Japan in 2002.

For Blatter, the experience of recent decades clearly shows: “The World Cup final must be a compact event.” This is important for the identity of the event, for the organization and the visitors.

“Aside from that,” Blatter continued, “the 2030 World Cup would have taken place exclusively in South America for historical reasons.”

A hundred years earlier, in 1930, the first World Cup took place in Uruguay.

Clear the way for Saudi Arabia

To insiders, the background to the maneuver is clear: if the event were to take place in South America in 2030, North Africa would take place in 2034. Now that Morocco is participating, this claim becomes null and void.

This paves the way for another candidate that Infantino is fond of: Saudi Arabia. The ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (38), is currently using all possible means to bring the football world to the desert state. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar can therefore be seen as a kind of dress rehearsal for the Saudis.
