Editorial on Radical Islamic Hamas Attack: The End of the Global South

Yesterday, unbearable footage was seen on social networks. A jeep with heavily armed Arab terrorists drives at a pace through a cheering crowd. A tied up Israeli woman lies on her stomach in the back of a truck, stripped down to her underwear. It is unclear who exactly these men are, just as the identity of the hostage is unknown, and it is unclear what fate awaits her.

The attack by the radical Islamic group Hamas on the only democracy in the Middle East has shocked the world and awakened dark memories of the region’s bloody past. As always with events like this, anyone doing something like this should feel safe. Palestinian fundamentalists have excellent relations not only with Tehran, but also with Moscow. In the spring, a Hamas delegation visited the Russian capital; The leadership of the Gaza Strip supports Vladimir Putin in the aggressive war against Ukraine.

We should not remain silent about the sins of the Israeli government, its settlement policies, the destruction of law and order and much more. However, romanticized solidarity with Palestine is noticeably rooted in the inventory of the so-called global South, the desired alternative to the evil capitalist West. The Russian warmonger Putin knows perfectly well how to ride this wave and turn states from Brazil to India, from China to Iran into a supposedly stable axis, an upstart in world politics, an anti-American international.

This movement is supported in the West by a phalanx of pacifists and advertising philosophers, consisting of right-wing nationalists and left-wing ideological journalists in a moral no man’s land. The Islamic warriors of God are moving in this stream and yesterday morning they were able to terrorize Israel, the state with the most powerful army in the world. The death and blood of October 7, 2023 marks a dark chapter in the history of the Holy Land and exposes naive talk about the global south. There is only one choice: between the free world and the unfree world.
