The cycling season ends in Langkawi with a Dutch victory, the 128th this year

The cycling year 2022 ends today with the last stage of the Langkawi Tour. Alex Molenaar from Team Burgos BH won the stage and with 128 victories took the final ranking of the Netherlands.

The Malaysian round was the last serious race of the year. Time for a review: the Dutch figures at a glance.

The men and women have cycled 128 victories together. The women in particular stand out with an unprecedented number of 71. To get an idea: in 2015 there were 21. Since then, women’s cycling has been on the rise. Last season they won 63 times.

Van Vleuten and Wiebes

Of course, the name Annemiek van Vleuten cannot be missing when we talk about women’s cycling. She was able to win all three Grand Tours (Italy, France and Spain). To make matters worse, she also won the World Cup road race in Australia with a broken elbow.

But Van Vleuten didn’t have the most victories for the Netherlands, that was Lorena Wiebes. The sprinter won 21 (!) races this season. Not normally in Grand Tours, but nonetheless: an unprecedented achievement.

Then the men. They (also) took the way up. This year they won 57 games together, 17 more than last season. In 2019, the impressive number of 69 was tapped.

This season, speed demon Fabio Jakobsen won the most (13 times), followed by Olav Kooij and Dylan Groenewegen – also sprinters – with 7 wins each.

Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders

A remarkable fact: never before have Dutch riders won Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders in the same season. Dylan van Baarle, maimed in the sand, threw up both hands in Roubaix while Mathieu van der Poel pedaled Tadej Pogacar off his bike in Belgium.

Two more Dutch victories at the Tour of Langkawi were added today and yesterday. On Monday Sjoerd Bax won and today Molenaar was the strongest.

It will be ready before 2022. The peloton calms down for a while. After a few months of hibernation, drivers will wake up again in early 2023. The first ProTour race awaits in January: the Tour Down Under in Australia.
