The last time, in 2019, it was YB icon Miralem Sulejmani (35), a Serb without a second passport, for whom going to the Marakana meant rubber legs. This time it is Darian Males (22), a dual Swiss-Serbian citizen, who makes his heart beat faster as he enters the field of the stadium in Belgrade. His family comes from Banja Luka, the Serbian part of present-day Bosnia-Herzegovina, a four-hour drive from the capital.

“I had to arrange a lot of tickets,” says the Lucerne resident. There are important people in his life who will see him play for the first time. “My whole family will be in the stadium. But I try to ignore it.” Yet he associates the match in Serbia in the Champions League with one word: “Proud!”

Last season, Males was FC Basel’s top scorer with 28 points – a circumstance that seems to come from another life. For YB, the attacking winger has only one assist to his name so far. If he scores against Belgrade, at least he has not forbidden himself to celebrate. “I will normally celebrate when I score a goal. I’m a YB player and I’m thrilled to be here. Of course, I’ve been a fan of Red Star since I was little. But respect for my team and the YB fans comes first. There are no friends from the other team in this game.

The men’s first YB goal is too late

Clear edge! The only thing missing now is the purpose that would make this celebration necessary. After all, 535 minutes of action have now been added up – for someone who scored eleven times in 47 games last season and made the final pass 17 times, it is time for his first direct goal.

In any case, the excellent technician has had plenty of playing time lately. He was allowed to play in the last four Super League matches from the start. The departure of Fabian Rieder and the injury of Kastriot Imeri helped. Let’s see what it looks like in Belgrade.
