Big relief for Etienne Vaessen (28). The goalkeeper of the Dutch Eredivisie team Waalwijk published an update on his condition on the club website: “First of all, I would like to thank my colleagues from the medical staff and of course the people at Ajax and the ambulance staff for their quick and correct action,” he wrote. Vaessen was wrong was in life-threatening condition on Saturday after a collision during the match against Ajax Amsterdam and had to be resuscitated on the field. The match was stopped when the score was 3-2 for Ajax.
Vaessen, who has already been released from the hospital, writes: “It was very nice to see everyone again.” He was able to make video calls with his teammates and staff. RKC captain Michiel Kramer confirmed in the NOS TV program “Studio Voetbal”: “A scan was made in the hospital. Luckily there was no bleeding.”
Club director Frank van Mosselveld has already praised the stricter measures in the Netherlands for such incidents on ESPN. The club boss is referring to the incident with ex-Ajax player Abdelhak Nouri, who suffered cardiac arrest in 2017 at the age of 20. Nouri suffered severe brain damage that still affects him today. Van Mosselveld: “The protocol has been tightened since then. If you are not sure, start CPR automatically. I was told he was completely out of action for a while, so of course I was scared.”
Fortunately, things have ended well now; for goalkeeper Vaessen it’s all about recovery. The 28-year-old wishes his team good luck for next Saturday’s match against Almere City with Swiss goalkeeper Stijn Keller (23). It is not yet known how the abandoned match against Ajax will be judged. (str)
