Application not resubmitted: ski brand Hirscher renounces Austrian athletes

Thanks to his ski brand Van Deer, Marcel Hirscher (left, here together with Henrik Kristoffersen) is still present at the World Cup.

Since Marcel Hirscher (34) announced in the autumn of 2021 that he would return to the World Cup with his ski brand Van Deer, it has made headlines again and again. First because the eight-time World Cup winner signed his former rival Henrik Kristoffersen (29, no.), then when he brought Red Bull on board. And since then there has been a lot of fuss about the logo.

After this was finally adjusted and supposedly presentable for the World Cup, it apparently still needs to be covered up. But that’s not the only excitement Van Deer is causing. Because now people in Austria are wondering what happened to the plan to become part of the Austria Ski Pool.

No application has been submitted for the swimming pool

“During the transfer period after the end of the World Cup season, Van Deer did not register for participation in the group,” financial officer of the Austrian ski association Patrick Ortlieb (56) told “oe24”. What is this pool about? Only those who are members are allowed to equip the Austrian top athletes with skis. However, before you are admitted to the elite, you must first take care of the young people for two years. And Van Deer doesn’t seem to like that. It is better not to rest Austrian athletes.

Not only does it cost a lot of money, you also have to develop children’s and youth skis, Ortlieb understands. “It’s clearly not worth it for them.” However, athletes from countries without swimming pools can be equipped. This would also be possible for young people. For example, according to information from Blick, there are no young athletes with Van Deer skis in Switzerland.

Back door for Austrians

There is another way the Austrians can benefit from Hirscher’s know-how. At least indirectly. Met Augment is a Van Deer brand that previously focused on speed disciplines.

And the top athletes are allowed to ride on this. For example Max Franz (34). However, he is still out of action for Augment because he broke both legs before the start of the season last year and is unlikely to return to the World Cup until next season. (beer)
