It’s slowly becoming scary. Double pack on the first day of play. Goal on the second matchday. Double package on the third day of play. Hat trick on matchday four. And another double on matchday five. Serhou Guirassy (27) – a player who is not known to every fan – is currently tearing up the Bundesliga in the shirt of VfB Stuttgart. After five games he has no fewer than ten goals to his name.
The Guinean has thus lifted his team from Stuttgart – with whom Leonidas Stergiou (21), captain of the U21 national team, recently signed a contract – to the top of the table. A team that had to fight for survival in relegation a few months ago will be top of the Bundesliga on Saturday evening after their recent 3-1 win against Darmstadt. Pure madness!
Guirassy does what he wants with the opponent’s defense. “Sportschau” calls him “indefensible” and “DAZN” calls him “currently the best striker in Europe”. But it’s not just the number of goals that is impressive. But also the way he achieves this. There are two real contenders for goal of the month against Darmstadt. A seamless long shot from the turn and a fine lob from an acute angle. His output is no coincidence, but pure class.
The 1.87 meter tall hunk follows in the footsteps of another top striker: ex-Bayern star Robert Lewandowski (35). Only the Pole scored ten goals after five matchdays. In the 2020/21 season he broke the starting record of the legendary Gerd Müller (75†, eight Bundesliga goals in the first five games in 1968). At the end of that season, Lewandowski scored an incredible record 41 Bundesliga goals.
Guirassy never scored more than eleven goals in a (competition) season in his professional career. This explosion comes as a surprise to most observers. But someone probably saw it coming: Lothar Matthäus (62) brought Guirassy into play as Bayern’s new striker in the spring. He praised him at the time as “safe on the ball, fast and robust”. But his suggestion was met with shaking of heads in many places. Now no one laughs anymore. Instead, Bayern brought in Harry Kane, who scored ‘only’ four goals in four games.
In Stuttgart, Guirassy has quickly become a cult figure. Everyone is enthusiastic about the Guinean international. Coach Sebastian Hoeness (41) testifies that he has the “complete range” – in addition to brutal finishing power, this also includes playful qualities, athleticism and defensive behavior. And Guirassy? He just says, “I’m in the best shape of my life.” And stay humble. “I’m just happy that I can help my team.” Help with goals on the treadmill.
