After the kissing scandal: agreement between Nati stars and the Spanish federation?

Victor Francos, chairman of the Spanish top sports authority CSD.

Following a strike, the majority of Spain’s national footballers have agreed to return to the squad. “We have reached a series of agreements that will be drawn up and signed tomorrow,” Victor Francos, chairman of Spain’s top sports authority CSD, announced on Wednesday. Only two of the 23 professionals called up for the Nations League are not prepared to take this route.

The negotiations probably lasted until the early morning hours. “The players have expressed their concerns to us about the need for deep changes within the RFEF and the association has promised that these changes will be implemented immediately,” Francos reported afterwards.

A day earlier, FC Barcelona defender Mapi Leon emphasized that most players were in the world champion’s training camp against their will. ‘We were forced to come here. But if they want to punish us, we just have to come,” said the 28-year-old, who was not part of the victorious World Cup team.

Heavy sanctions?

Due to their strike due to the disagreement within the association, which escalated with the Rubiales affair, the national players are facing the threat of harsh sanctions. “If they don’t come, the government should enforce the law. The law is the law,” says Francos: “The government has a duty to intervene. We will do everything we can to resolve the problem.” Apparently this worked.

World champion Jenni Hermoso was kissed on the mouth without her consent by the now resigning Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales during the awards ceremony after the final in Sydney. The incident sparked a wave of international outrage.

The unnominated Hermoso and twenty other world champions stated in an open letter on Friday that they wanted to stay away from the national team – the measures taken were not enough for them. The new national coach Montse Tome still called up the majority of the players. (AFP)
