The third Champions League campaign starts with a big part for YB: RB Leipzig, the German Cup winner, comes to Wankdorf. Also there: Xavi Simons (20).
The Dutchman was loaned from PSG this summer and has taken the Bundesliga by storm. “A great boy!”, says RB coach Marco Rose (47) at the PK prior to the YB match. Simons registered an impressive seven scoring points (three goals, four assists) in his first four appearances. An announcement!
Simons was born with football talent. His father, Regillio, was a footballer in the Netherlands and a staunch supporter of FC Barcelona. His admiration for midfield conductor Xavi is reflected in the name of his son.
And indeed: at the age of seven, Simons joined his father’s favorite club, Barcelona. He spent nine years at the famous La Masia Academy. Even then he became famous thanks to his blond curls and his spectacular playing. At the age of 14, he already has a million followers on Instagram.
PSG signed him in 2019 – a marketing coup. Despite making his professional debut at the age of 17, his big break never came. Simons has to take the detour via Eindhoven, where he impresses with his technical class, enthusiasm and goals – he will also score against FCZ in the Europa League in 2022. With 19 goals, the youngster secured himself the top scorer in the Eredivisie.
Paris brought him back this summer and immediately loaned him to Leipzig. In Germany people are on fire for the dazzling attacker. In the first four rounds, the kicker voted him into the top eleven three times. He quickly became a difference player for RB. “A prototype for our game,” says Rose. “He loves chasing the ball and leading duels and is also a gifted footballer.”
YB coach Raphael Wicky is also full of praise for Leipzig’s high flyers. I’ve known him for a long time: “In 2019 I saw him at a tournament in the US. Since then he has developed very well.”
By the way: for Simons the game in Wankdorf has a very special meaning. He is coming to make his Champions League debut in Bern. (sbe)
