“I didn’t feel well physically and mentally.” A statement that will make you sit up and take notice. Finally, Fabian Rieder (21) describes his state of mind after parting ways with YB after reaching the Champions League and moving to Stade Rennes. But Rieder’s batteries were dead at that point. The summer was a “difficult time,” he says in the “Zweikampf” podcast.
Of course he was looking forward to the change, but after a long pre-season with the Winter Football World Cup, the European U21 Championships, short holidays and constant speculation about a change, the youngster was “out of the woods”.
“I could hardly process all the events in such a short time,” Rieder reflects. In winter and summer he had about seven days off twice. Hardly recovered, the new season started again quickly in Bern. The extra media attention surrounding his upcoming international transfer took extra energy.
He is not the type of person who likes to be in the media; he prefers to concentrate on football. “I wanted to deliver top performance, but that didn’t always work out.” Yet he is also a bit ‘proud’ of how he ‘mastered’ this phase.
Instead of joining the national team, he spent the last international break with his girlfriend in Mallorca. With charged batteries, he also feels fresh enough to take on the new challenge in Brittany.
In the beginning, Rieder only had the Bundesliga in mind. Only after a while was he open to a move to Ligue 1. The fact that ex-Nati star Gelson Fernandes (37) recommended the club also played a role. When Rieder agreed to join, those responsible at Rennes were able to quickly convince him in conversations.
“The trust and willingness to sign me was really incredible,” said Rieder. The Brittany club also immediately accepted that YB wanted to keep him until after the Champions League play-offs. The coach pointed to a date and said, “I want you in the squad for this match.” This meant the match on September 2 against Brest, when Rieder made his debut, albeit only in the 93rd minute.
No problem for Rieder: “It was clear to me that I would not move here as a permanent player.” No longer having the same attitude as at YB was the challenge he was looking for. And if he gets his way, he could really hit the ground running in France.
Rieder knows: at Rennes they build on talent and ideally sell it on at a profit – such as Jérémy Doku (to Man City for 60 million) or Eduardo Camavinga (to Real Madrid for 31 million last season). Rieder makes no secret of the fact that these examples played a role in his decision: “If that is also the case for me, they will certainly not put any obstacles in my way – as long as the price is right.” (dti)
