Irish data protection authorities fined video service TikTok 345 million euros. This was due to an investigation into the processing of user data of minors, which took place between July and December 2020. Ireland’s data protection authority announced this on Friday.

This specifically concerned some of the platform’s settings and age verification during registration. The default setting was that posts, such as videos of users between the ages of 13 and 17, could be published publicly by default. By default, the comment function on profiles was also accessible to all other users.

Facebook received an even higher fine

In response, Tiktok emphasized that the results of the investigation were primarily related to attitudes that prevailed three years ago. “And many of those conclusions are no longer valid because of the measures we put in place before the investigation began.” This means that all users under the age of 16 have their accounts set to private by default.

In addition to the fine, TikTok was asked to bring its data processing into compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) within three months. In May, a record fine of 1.2 billion euros was imposed on Facebook group Meta under the GDPR.

TikTok is in the process of moving European user data to a new data center in Ireland. Another data center is under construction in Ireland and Norway. By the end of 2024, European user data must be transferred there and stored there as standard.

TikTok wants to gain the trust of Europe with a plan called “Project Clover”. The video app has a difficult political position in the West because it is owned by Chinese company Bytedance. The EU Commission and some European governments have banned the use of the app on their employees’ work mobile phones. With “Project Clover”, TikTok wants to guarantee that access to European users’ personal data is tightly regulated and transparent. (SDA)
