A trip over one of the passes to Ticino? Beautiful. But maybe a little more for holidays and free time. However, if you want to attend an appointment in Ticino, the Gotthard Tunnel is preferred. This tunnel is now closed until Friday evening at 8 p.m., but the runner-up from Biel will then start the championship in Lugano. For the outward journey, the only option is to travel over the pass.
Biel’s sporting director Martin Steinegger admits that the situation has led to some discussions. ‘We had three options. First, leave early. Second, arrive the night before and spend the night on site. Third: leave very early, have an ice cream in Ticino late in the morning and book a hotel for an afternoon siesta.”
Ultimately, they chose option 1. “We returned from Sweden on Monday after our European Cup matches,” Steinegger explains. “After discussions with the players, we agreed that this was the best idea.” The alternative route via San Bernardino never played a role in Steinegger’s considerations. “The Gotthard is not the worst pass,” he says. “The descent on the Ticino side is a bit difficult, but not too bad.”
Steinegger has often driven on winding roads in his long career. However, he does not have bad memories: “It is more of a logistical and organizational challenge than a physical one. When a team plans its travel, it always tries to arrive as late as possible so that the players don’t have to wait too long. But at the start of the season you don’t want to take any risks. “Our goal is to have sufficient room to play,” explains the team leader. “That’s why we’re leaving earlier than normal and we hope not to get stuck in traffic.”
Would things be different in the play-offs? “Difficult question,” he laughs. “If I say yes, it means that we would not take this opening match seriously. We had also booked a hotel for a play-off match in Lugano, but the traffic problems were greater then than now. I think we would have made the same decision in the play-offs as we do now.”
