On Saturday, Thai boxer Dani Rodriguez (25) suffered the first defeat of his career in Bangkok after 41 victories in a row. In the semi-finals of the Rajadamnern World Series (RWS), the jury awarded victory to his opponent Yodwicha Porboonsit (27) after three rounds. But no one really knows why.

Because Rodriguez is better all fight than his Thai opponent, who is a true superstar of the scene with 192 wins from 252 fights. The Swiss dominates and takes the harder blows. And yet the victory goes to the local hero.

“Something’s Wrong Here”

A mystery for Rodriguez’s trainer and instructor Leonardo “Dado” Irmici: “It’s incomprehensible. Especially in the 3rd round, Yodwicha just ran away and did nothing for the fight. And yet a judge also scored for him this round,” he tells Blick.

There is a great lack of understanding for the decision in Rodriguez’s camp. How can something like this happen in a fight like this? “For us, something is not right here, because there were no arguments in favor of Yodwicha’s victory,” says Irmici.

The controversial decision also has people in Thailand shaking their heads. Experts, media and online forums agree that the Swiss should have won the battle. The fans are outraged on the official Instagram posts of the RWS account, with numerous comments talking about a wrong decision or even “robbery”.

Appeal filed

Rodriguez’s team has now officially appealed the decision. “We will appeal the verdict,” Irmici said. In this way, it is hoped that Dani Rodriguez’s undefeated fighting record can still be maintained. “If this works, the fight would have to be repeated,” the trainer is clear.

Last year, Rodriguez met Yodwicha twice and won both encounters. But the second fight in particular was very close. “At that time the game was really on even terms and we would have accepted a defeat or a draw,” Irmici remembers.

So was the local fighter simply favored to avoid losing to Rodriguez for a third time? At this point it is all just speculation, an answer to the appeal is still pending.

But for Rodriguez himself it is clear that he has not lost the battle. He writes on Instagram under his latest post: “I still feel undefeated. The world knows the right result!”
