Jonas Vingegaard wins the 16th stage of the Vuelta solo and is only 29 seconds behind his teammate and leader in the general classification Sepp Kuss.
Vingegaard celebrated his second stage win of the year after just 120 km at the top of the Bejes and can once again have legitimate hopes of the Tour de France-Vuelta double. When the 26-year-old Dane attacked four kilometers from the finish, his Jumbo-Visma teammates Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic let him go without a fight.
Vingegaard improved from 3rd to 2nd place, he is still almost half a minute behind the American Kuss, who has been wearing the red leader’s jersey since the 8th stage. Third-placed Roglic is 1:33 minutes behind, Spaniard Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates), the best non-jumbo driver, is another minute behind.
The mountain finishes are Vingegaard’s domain, he had already triumphed in the 13th stage of the legendary Tourmalet. There could be a change of leader on Wednesday as we climb the fearsome Angliru, one of Europe’s toughest passes at 12.3km and a maximum gradient of 24 per cent. (SDA)
