Bright spot for Nati in Kosovo: Freuler also shoots sharply – but against the team

Until five seconds before the end of injury time, the motto from Nati’s perspective was: No Howler – but luckily there are Freuler!

Although the Swiss lost ground minute by minute in Pristina, they were in the lead in injury time. Thanks to Remo Freuler: the 31-year-old made it 1-0 in the 14th minute with a remarkable volley, his 7th goal in the 57th international match. With the score 2-1 in the 79th minute, contrary to the style of play, Freuler’s finish forced Kosovo captain Rrahmani to score an own goal.

“What do we do? We counterattack.”

Freuler shoots sharply. But unlike the weak captain Granit Xhaka, he does not do this after the match, but during the match. And then afterwards it’s a bull’s-eye. Verbal. ‘We are not intelligent enough. We have the ball with 30 seconds to go and just need to get a throw-in or corner kick. But what do we do? “We really want to score the third goal and counter-attack,” complains Freuler, who watched Muriqi’s equalizer from the bench after being substituted in the 84th minute.

Fortunately, we won the first three group matches and we still have everything in our own hands. A lot needs to be improved against Andorra. It will take a lot of experience on the pitch to decide the match at an early stage.”

Speaking of experience: Freuler has it. He has been a regular starter for fourteen matches and is the ideal shadow man for director Xhaka. Coach Murat Yakin is also calling on Freuler’s services in Kosovo, even though he has not played a minute at the club since April 22. Hence the move from Nottingham back to Italy on the final day of the transfer window. «The last months in England were not satisfactory. And unfortunately the move to Bologna took a long time.” Freuler is certain: “It will look different for me in terms of competition training.”
