KHL champion goalkeeper Adam Reideborn: Unwanted in Sweden, welcome to SCB

The latter will be bitten by the dogs. This is especially true for goalkeepers. After last season, Philip Wüthrich (25) was caught at SC Bern. A foreigner was placed in front of him: Adam Reideborn (31).

The Swede has the best sporting credentials. He was twice named the best goalkeeper in his home country. And most recently, he became KHL champion twice in a row with CSKA Moscow, where he was the undisputed No. 1 in the spring and celebrated five shutouts in the playoffs.

When asked why he decided to move to SCB after four years in the KHL, he said: “I know it is a big club that has won titles in the past. They wanted a new coach with a good system. Hopefully Jussi Tapola can repeat the success he had with Tappara Tampere here.”

Since Leonardo Genoni’s departure to Zug and the 2019 title under Kari Jalonen, SCB have hardly been able to calm down. With Tapola and Reideborn, the club should finally regain stability.

Swedish clubs boycott KHL mercenaries

A return to a Swedish club was not an option for Reideborn. Because he is persona non grata in his home country. Due to remaining in the KHL after the Russian attack on Ukraine last season, Reideborn, Johann Mattsson, Robin Press, Fredrik Claesson, Jakob Lilja (new Ambri) and Adam Almqvist (most recently Zug) were excluded from the national team, and the Clubs agreed that none of them would be signed. “I have to accept that,” says the goalkeeper.

Why did Reideborn decide to stay with the Moscow Army Club despite the war? “I signed a contract before everything started. That was valid. I know a lot of people think this was the wrong decision. But it wasn’t that easy to change clubs. For example, after the 2022 playoffs, all options collapsed. Now I’m happy that it worked out with Bern.”

His compatriot Lucas Wallmark (ex ZSC, now Fribourg) left Russia immediately after the outbreak of war and bought out his contract with CSKA, which would have cost him about a million francs.

Reideborn was heavily criticized in his home country. Although he made no comment, his sister Sofia, 24, vehemently defended him. “She’s always on Twitter and says what she wants to say, which wasn’t very popular in Sweden.”

Father did not want to see Reideborn in goal

In Sweden people were surprised to see that SCB Reideborn (and Corban Knight from Omsk) signed and that this did not make any waves in Switzerland. «As always, we did our homework. And we inquired specifically about these two players, made many phone calls and did background checks,” SCB sporting director Andrew Ebbett explained.

If his father had had his way, Reideborn would not have become a goalkeeper at all. He tried to encourage his son to become a defender because he found it too nerve-wracking to see him in goal. Failed. Sofia also became a goalkeeper, but is currently without a club. «My father couldn’t stand to see me play for a long time and would go for a walk during the games. But he has been watching my games for three or four years,” says Adam.

As a teenager he also played football and golf. Reideborn doesn’t know if he is the best golfer on the team with a handicap of 4. “Corban Knight is a good golfer. He’s probably better than me. Patrik Nemeth, Jesse Zgraggen and a few others are also playing well,” says Reideborn, who has also had his wife Nathalie and son Ben (4) by his side again since last week.
