He heads the largest parliamentary group in the Federal Palace, is considered a loyal pacesetter and serves as a kind of unofficial president of the SVP, especially because Ticino Marco Chiesa (48) likes to give him priority at public political meetings in German-speaking Switzerland.
Thomas Aeschi also has an excellent network across party lines, although in the current campaign mode he relies more on slogans than on building bridges (“No to the asylum chaos! Give your vote to the SVP!”).
Even at 44, he still retains some of the image of a young talent; The competition and the media once respectfully recognized him as “the foster son of Christoph Blocher”. In 2015, he stood as a candidate for the Federal Council as successor to Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf (67), but had to make way for Guy Parmelin (63).
In other words: Federal Bern knows the politician Aeschi very well, but the person Aeschi always remained a bit of a mystery. As we know, he is a management consultant, has risen to the rank of first lieutenant in the army and is in a relationship. Whoever is behind the technocratic facade of the HSG economist with a Harvard degree has remained largely secret until now.
Because SonntagsBlick was able to find out something about the Zuger’s private life – which will be greatly enriched: Thomas Aeschi will become a father early next year.
His 32-year-old partner Valeria Geissbühler is four months pregnant. And not only that: the two are now engaged.
“Yes, that is true,” he confirms when asked. “If all goes well, we will become parents of a child in February,” he says. “We are very happy.” He won’t say whether it’s a boy or a girl.
The couple is extremely politically skilled, their commitment extends from the national to the local level: while Aeschi is politicizing in Bern, Geissbühler has been serving as SVP on the Schübelbach SZ municipal council since 2016, where she is responsible for the construction and environmental department . She works professionally as a medical analyst at the University of Zurich.

And how did the two meet? Of course on an SVP occasion. Aeschi still remembers it clearly: “On the saddle at the start of the SVP elections in Switzerland on August 31, 2019.” So for exactly one legislature, to put it in political terms.
Here a family grows thoroughly within the horizon of the celebration; where two working parents do not necessarily correspond to the model promoted by the SVP. In this respect at least, the Geissbühler/Aeschi duo is almost more reminiscent of the slogan of the feminists of the 1970s: ‘The private is political.’
There are certainly plenty of childcare options in the Schübelbach area: for example the Z’Wirbelhus in Siebnen SZ or the Aladin daycare center.
