Hansi Flick surprisingly appointed Ilkay Gündogan as captain nine months before the European Championship in his own country. The national coach announced this prior to the international match against Japan on Saturday (8.45 pm, RTL) in Wolfsburg.
Gundogan will form a ‘management duo’ with Joshua Kimmich. “It gives us new energy that we can use,” Flick said.
“I’m happy with the confidence. It is a great honor for me to be able to lead this young team onto the field,” said Gündogan, who was aware of the “responsibility”.
In the selection for the match against Japan, Thomas Müller (121) and Kimmich (79) have played more international matches than Gündogan (67). Before his serious injury, Manuel Neuer was the captain of the DFB. “Manu has to get better first. We hope he will return soon. But that is a matter for the future,” says Flick. (AFP/SME)
