Out. End. About. At some point the hammer will come. The ultimate ending. And then the pressing question: what now? “Most football players hardly think about what will happen after they retire during their career,” says Yanick Brecher. The FCZ goalkeeper thinks otherwise. The subject has occupied his mind for some time. And that despite the fact that the 30-year-old from Zurich still has a contract with the city club until 2027. “I’m aware that I’m living a very privileged life right now, but I want to have a plan for the future,” says Brecher.
The father of two children does not want to leave anything to chance after his retirement. The uncertainty about his end as a professional footballer also preoccupies his wife, who specializes in financial planning for women – with a foresight of her own budget. “As a professional in the Super League you don’t earn so much that you can lie down later.” But for Brecher, it’s not just about the money. “Above all, I want to find new content and get energy in life.”
His awareness was sharpened by conversations with colleagues who reported withdrawal symptoms after retirement. “I too will fall into a hole after my last match. This is inevitable. Football is my great passion. If that disappears overnight, I have a lot of trouble with it. But I want to fill this void with something meaningful as soon as possible,” says Brecher, who crowned his career with FC Zurich in the summer of 2022 with the Swiss national title.
An emotional documentary emerged from this time. “Yanick Brecher – FCZ Fieber” is the name of the film that premiered in cinemas this week. The master goalkeeper fluctuates between humility and dominance in the hour-long strip. “I always strive for perfection, even if that is not possible in football. But I personally have had an extreme development. I used to just go to training and not say a word,” Brecher recalls. Over time, the quiet and introverted goalkeeping talent has become a leader, the mouthpiece of the team.”
Brecher later sees himself as a leader in the private sector. For the film premiere in the Corso in Zurich, he chose an audience that, in addition to his friends and family, also includes many representatives from his manager Patrick Farinato’s network. They are connections that should help the skilled poly mechanic to gain a new foothold in the professional world after his final whistle. “Typical Yanick,” says Farinato. “He is a main character, always very analytical and never satisfied. He always wants to get ahead and get better.”
The film “Yanick Brecher – FCZ Fieber” will be shown on Friday (11.15 pm) on blue zoom.
