Masters of the top eight: WTA Finals this year in Mexico

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

The number 1 in women’s tennis: Iga Swiatek.

The WTA Finals, the Masters of the best eight players of the year, take place in the Mexican resort of Cancun. The game will be played on the Caribbean coast from October 29 to November 5. As number 11 on the relevant ranking, Belinda Bencic, the semi-finalist of 2019, still has a chance of qualifying.

This ends a tug-of-war that has increasingly irritated tennis professionals. Less than two months before the event, the location was not clear. Discussions included Saudi Arabia, which caused criticism due to the status of women’s rights, or the Czech Republic, where Belarusian and Russian players are not allowed to enter the country.

The WTA Finals took place in Mexico (Guadalajara) in 2021, Fort Worth, Texas hosted last year. The WTA actually wanted to hold its year-end tournament in the Chinese port city of Shenzhen for ten years from 2019. Due to the pandemic and the ‘affair’ surrounding former top player Peng Shuai, only one event took place. (SDA)
