It’s been a while since the New York Jets finished a regular season with more wins than losses. In 2015, the football team achieved another record of ten wins against seven bankruptcies. It’s been thirteen years since they last made the playoffs.
In the recent past, the jets were only smiled wearily. They hardly represented serious competition.
That should all be different now. One name in particular sets the mood in the Gang Green: Aaron Rodgers. With the 2010 Super Bowl champion, the once-proud franchise wants to take flight again. The 39-year-old Californian has probably taken on the toughest job of the NFL season, which kicks off Friday night.
Rodgers’ skill on the field is beyond question. In terms of passing precision and game intelligence, he is often credited with NFL legend Tom Brady (46). However, Rodgers can’t provide the perfect poster boy image that Brady has cultivated over the years. Quite the opposite.
In the corona pandemic, Rodgers came under criticism because it turned out that the player had not been vaccinated against the virus. Rodgers always emphasized that he was “immunized,” but by that he meant only homeopathic treatment.
With the vaccination topic, Rodgers still manages to polarize today: the football star is in the stands when Novak Djokovic plays Borno Gojo at the US Open. He later shared a photo of Djokovic on Instagram, but deleted the fringe advertising of Corona vaccine manufacturer Moderna. He also labeled the tennis star in the photo with ‘Novax Djokovic’ – an allusion to the fact that the Serb is also an opponent of vaccination.
However, with other substances in the body, the athlete is less prudish. Rodgers is known to repeatedly use the herbal brew Ayahuasca. This causes psychedelic states, contains the drug DMT and is therefore banned in several countries. “For me, self-love is one of the cornerstones of common sense. That’s what ayahuasca did for me. It helped me love myself unconditionally,” Rodgers said in a podcast. In the US, ayahuasca is only allowed for religious purposes.
Aaron Rodgers also caused a stir after last season: other players were already on vacation on the beach when the quarterback announced his unorthodox recovery program. For four days, Rodgers retreats into complete darkness and cuts off all contact with the outside world. In the so-called “dark retreat” he also thinks about his further professional career. Did he realize at that moment that it was time for a team change?
For Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, the season starts on Monday evening with the game against the Bufallo Bills (kick-off at 2:15 am). It’s a first endurance test to see if the rescuer can really take his team to new heights.
