Something is suddenly moving in Spanish football after the kissing scandal. The controversial national coach Jorge Vilda (42) was kicked out on Tuesday. This was confirmed by the Spanish federation in an official statement. His successor has also been announced: Montserrat Tomé will take over.
In addition, the association apologizes for the behavior of boss Luis Rubiales (46), who kissed player Jennifer Hermoso (33) on the mouth against her will at the award ceremony after the World Cup victory. A turnaround after the association was initially with Rubiales.
Most of Vilda’s coaching staff have resigned in support of Hermoso, and the world champions are also on strike. Vilda and Rubiales are considered close allies since 15 players went on strike against Vilda earlier in September 2022 in protest of the manager’s methods.
Vilda recently criticized Rubiales’ behavior, but also applauded the association leader’s inflammatory speech at an extraordinary general meeting. Rubiales refused the resignation demanded by large sections of Spanish politics.
Before the separation from Vilda, the association announced that it would take a number of measures in the coming days “to improve the management of the association and to repair the damage caused as much as possible.”
However, it remains unclear what consequences the kissing scandal could have for the association or Rubiales. He sincerely wants to apologize to the football institutions, writes interim president Pedro Rocha in the letter published on Tuesday. Rubiales’ behavior does not reflect the values of Spanish society, he has done “huge damage” to Spanish society and football.
It is now the task of the association to ensure that such a case does not occur again, says Rocha. In addition, the association supports FIFA and the Spanish sports field to come to a decision “that will make good the damage” as soon as possible. The national sports administration court TAD and the public prosecutor’s office are also dealing with the case.
Rubiales was elected President of the Spanish Federation in May 2018. He is also Vice-President of the UEFA Executive Committee. (AFP/be)
