Last weekend, Eritreans attacked each other in Opfikon ZH. Twelve people were injured in the clash between supporters of the regime of Isayas Afewerki (77) and his opponents. Three Eritreans were arrested.
If safety director Mario Fehr (64) from Zurich has his way, the riots must have consequences. Fehr announced that he would pass on the names of those responsible to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). He has set his sights on the Eritreans who stand behind ruler Afewerki: “There is no reason why Eritreans loyal to the regime in Switzerland should continue to enjoy protection status,” Fehr told the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”.
The security director asks the federal government to check the residence permits of the Eritreans. The files have not yet arrived in Bern, but SEM spokesman Daniel Bach says: “We will look at these cases and see what legal options we have.”
In theory, the federal government has the option of not granting or even withdrawing residence permits. For example, the Asylum Law stipulates that a refugee will not receive protection if he or she is not worthy of asylum because of reprehensible acts, has violated or endangered Switzerland’s internal or external security, or if he or she has been expelled from the country. country.
The federal government can also revoke the residence or settlement permit of refugees because of, among other things, a threat to public safety.
Whether this is already the case is doubtful because of last weekend’s brawl. Barriers are high – probably lowest for migrants who do not have refugee status but have been admitted temporarily. These are asylum seekers who should actually leave Switzerland, but whose deportation is not permissible, unreasonable or impossible.
And that is the real problem in the case of Eritrea: a voluntary return to Eritrea is possible. But: “The Eritrean authorities still do not accept the forced return of their citizens,” writes the SEM. Not even if they are supporters of the regime. (sf)
