No national team member of staff has caused as much discussion this year as Yann Sommer (34). In the winter he moved to Bayern Munich, replacing the injured Manuel Neuer (37). It wasn’t long before he was met with fierce criticism. The goalkeeper has since left Munich for Milan.
But now Nati coach Murat Yakin (48) returns in an interview with “Sport1” to Sommer’s time with the German record champion. “Yann was pulled by a slingshot,” he rumbles against Bayern Munich. Sommer did not deserve this treatment. “He fell victim to a mechanism that only occurs at Bayern.”
Yakin doesn’t value criticism much. “I didn’t understand you. You knew Yann and knew who to get.” He showed what he can do between the posts. Moreover, he never complained about anything, on the contrary. “He was under extreme pressure, which he eventually withstood. But it also showed that he is a strong goalkeeper.”
Still, Yakin has the feeling that the Bayern period has not left Sommer untouched. “It was not easy for him. When he came to the national team, of course I spoke to him. But that was not Yann as I know him. With him you always have to look at the people. He needs basic confidence to be 100 percent to perform.”
Summer’s move to Italy’s Serie A welcomes Yakin. “As long as he gets the chance to play abroad, he should do it. He still has a lot to do, Inter is already the right club.” The goalkeeper does not have to worry about his place in the national team for the time being, the coach assures: “As long as he is fit and performs, he is on my side.”
