Winterthur’s Samuel Ballet (22) will play against FC Luzern in the season opener, although he saw a red card in the last preparatory match for the new season. The FCL notices it, protests and is sure it will be approved. “I assume that we will win forfeit,” says FCL coach Mario Frick (48) after the game.

FC Winterthur initially announced that Ballet’s dismissal had been withdrawn by the referee after the friendly match and that no suspension had therefore been imposed. But: The red card against Ballet was not taken back at all, but everything was transferred to the association (SFV) according to the rules, it reports.

Ballet is on the punishment list, but…

The competition then refrained from blocking Rotsünder Ballet. In doing so, it invokes Article 78 of the Regulations. “For field references (yellow-red or red cards) in friendly matches and tournaments, the competent authority decides on a possible suspension or fine.”

Which caused confusion at the FCL and eventually the protest: On the SFV website, the red card is listed under the heading “Penalties” according to the referee’s report (see photo). However, it is not the “Penalties” section that is decisive for suspensions in league operations, but “Suspensions” – and the name of Ballet is missing.

Information about the red card on the SFV website.

The decision will be made in the coming days

“It may be a bit annoying. The presentation on the website (editor’s note). In principle, red cards from friendly matches do not flow into the competition,” says competition spokesman Philippe Guggisberg. Conversely, this means that the protest is hardly approved. A decision is expected in the course of next week.

Bitter for FC Luzern: FCL player Denis Simani (31) was suspended for four games in March for assault in a friendly against Bellinzona. As a result, the Lucerne appeals – unsuccessfully. Simani’s suspension remained. Probably because of a more serious crime.
