World Cup final far away: Luzern loves Kamundji (7th) as well.

For Switzerland’s fastest woman, Mujinga Kambundji (31), participating in top athletics in Lucerne is a matter of the heart. And the loud applause at the star presentation and the ceremony before the start proves that the hearts of the Lucerne fans also belong to the Bernese sprinter.

The spectators graciously acknowledge that Kambundji cannot run for the podium, but still saves seventh place at 11.24 seconds behind winner Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jam, 10.82). “Technically it was not a clean run,” says Kambundji at the finish. “But at least better than at the end of June at Athlétissima in Lausanne. At the moment I don’t feel any pain in my injured left foot. We’ll see how it looks the next morning.”

The born Berner will not write off the start at the World Cup in Budapest in a month. But Mujinga will have to forget his dream of a World Cup final in Hungary. First there are the Swiss championships in Bellinzona in ten days. A serious endurance test for Kambundji’s foot (inflamed plantar plate) with three runs in one day. With her 11.24 from Luzern she is at least ready for the national title.

Spitz defeats Petrucciani

The two fastest Swiss 400m men enjoy less attention than the Bernese 100m women during their track round at the Allmend. Between last year’s European Championship runner-up, Ricky Petrucciani (23), and the newly crowned U23 European Championship runner-up, Lionel Spitz (22), there is a duel “David” (Spitz) against “Goliath” (Petrucciani).

And the man from Zurich, who is a year younger, really “points” the Ticino with his strong finish: 45.90 seconds for Spitz against 46.76 for Petrucciani. The “Swiss Hero” – as Spitz was dubbed by the British TV commentator at the U23 European Championships in Espoo (Fi) for catching up on the home stretch – will soon break Mathias Rusterholz’s national record (44.99). In Espoo’s 4x400m heat, Spitz was stopped as the last runner in a fantastic 44.61 seconds.
