The Fortuna Sittard footballers have booked their second win of the season. During a visit to PSV, the team of former national coach Roger Reijners won 2-0. It was PSV’s first loss of the season.
Thanks to the win, Fortuna overtakes Team Eindhoven and is now fifth in the women’s Eredivisie.
Fortuna lost the first two games of the season against Ajax and Feyenoord, remaining without a goal in both games. At the end of September, the team showed signs of recovery with a 5-2 win at PEC Zwolle.
Things seemed to go wrong quickly against PSV as striker Joëlle Smits came on for goalkeeper Diede Lemey. However, the back post was cautious and then had the ball pinned. Denmark’s Amalie Thestrup had the next chance, but her shot went just over Fortuna’s crossbar.
Then it was Limburg’s turn to create chances. First Féli Delacauw shot at Lisan Alkemade’s goal, then Tessa Wullaert. In both cases, Alkemade managed to save the day.
They failed to do so when Belgium international Wullaert tried again shortly after and scored the 1-0 ten minutes from half-time.
Both teams had chances after the break. PSV became dangerous with several corner kicks and Fortuna only hit the post via substitute Hanna Huizenga.
PSV persisted, seeing a ball go off the line, but with five minutes remaining, Huizenga was luckier and scored to make it 2-0.
