Super League records: Streller trembles for Nsame – Ferreira for Frei

The Super League enters its 21st season and appears with a new look: more teams, more games, new mode. Blick names all the record players and record numbers since the introduction of Super League in the 2003/04 season and shows which records will be broken next season and which will probably remain untouchable.

• The most visited round
  The all-round record was set on the last match day of last season: 110,078 fans were present live in the five stadiums. Makes an average of 22,016 fans per game.
  > Now, with 6 games per round, attendance could be surpassed.
• Most goals
  Marco Streller has scored 111 goals in the Championship since Super League was introduced for Basel, and a further 8 goals in the former NLA for Thun.
  > Streller has to shiver this season: YB goals monster Jean-Pierre Nsame (30) is already on 100 Super League goals.
• top scorer
  Jean-Pierre Nsame scored 32 goals in the 2019/20 season.
  > With one club playing 38 games instead of 36 this season, Nsame’s record is in jeopardy.
• Most games
  Nelson Ferreira made 421 appearances for Thun and Lucerne in the Super League. His 16 appearances in the former NLA and two jump-off games do not count.
  > A record for eternity? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that? FCB veteran Fabian Frei (409 games) is only 13 games short of the only Super League record.
• The highest scoring round
  27 goals were scored in the 2nd round of the 2016/17 season.
  > That makes an average of 5.4 goals. Extrapolated to six games, that is 32 goals in one round.
• The highest scoring season
  The 2009/10 season produced a total of 599 goals. The 2011/12 season saw the fewest goals at 425.
  > Instead of the previous 180 matches per season, there are now 208 matches in the new “Scottish Mode”. A goalscoring record is to be expected.
• The season with the most tickets
  In the last season 2022/23, the referees drew a total of 865 yellow cards and 55 red cards, both top values.
  > Should also drop due to increased competition and mode change.

• Most successful trainers
  YB coach Gerardo Seoane (2019, 20, 21) and Christian Gross (2004, 05, 08) share this award with three Super League championship titles each.
  > With YB coach Raphael Wicky, only one of the 12 coaches starting the season so far has a Swiss championship title on his calling card.
• youngest coach
  Guillermo Abascal was 29 years and 1 day old when he made his debut as a Lugano coach on April 14, 2018.
  > Even with possible layoffs, a younger Super League coach is not in sight, at least not today.
• The fastest layoff
  YB defender Ljubo Milicevic sees red after 52 seconds on August 20, 2006 in Aarau because of an emergency brake. Actually, the record of Julian von Moos, who 8 seconds (!) after kick-off, on March 19, 2023, is Winterthur’s Schättin. But because the VAR is consulted first, it takes 67 seconds for Von Moos to see red.
  > 8 seconds would be hard to beat.
• The fastest goal
  Two Sion players share first place: Ermir Lenjani (April 7, 2019 against Lucerne) and Moussa Konate (May 18, 2015 against St. Gallen) score after 10 seconds!
  > Hit faster? Difficult but not impossible. The world record is held by English amateur footballer Marc Barrows, who scored on April 3, 2004 after 2.5 seconds (caught on video).
• The oldest player
  FCZ goalkeeper Andris Vanins is 40 years, 3 months and 4 days old in the game against Thun on August 3, 2020.
  > FCB goalie Hitz, Lugano captain Sabbatini and YB veteran Lustenberger start the season at 35 as the oldest players.
• The youngest player
  Aarau keeper Sascha Studer was 15 years, 6 months and 18 days young on his debut on April 1, 2007 against Sion.
  > Marvin Akahomen from Basel was 15 years, 9 months and 15 days old when he was baptized by fire last season. No one has come this close to the record in a long time. It will probably stay that way…
• Oldest goalscorer
  FCB defender Walter Samuel scored against Lugano on 13 April 2016 at the age of 38 years and 21 days to make it 2-0.
  > There is not a senior goalscorer in sight.
• The youngest goalscorer
  Ranking midfield gem Endogan Adili scores against Aarau on his debut on 13 May 2010 to make it 4–1. He is just 15 years 9 months 10 days young.
  > No goalscorer in Europe’s top leagues has ever been younger. A record for eternity?
• The card flood game
  Referee Sandro Schärer handed out 14 cards (13 yellow, 1 red) on February 20, 2022 in the match between Sion and FCZ.
  > It’s hard to imagine it’s raining so many cards this season.
• The greatest background
  On May 10, 2008, 38,015 spectators watched the goal between Basel and YB in Basel’s St. Jakob-Park.
  > More fans? Ruled out. The St.Jakob-Park (Switzerland’s largest stadium) is now reportedly sold out with 36,000 spectators.
• The highest wins
  So far, four matches have been played with a difference of seven goals: Basel – GC 8:1 (September 12, 2004), GC – Bellinzona 7:0 (November 7, 2009), YB – Lugano 7:0 (April 9, 2016 ), St. Gallen – Basel 0:7 (April 17, 2016).
  > Why should a football match be even higher?
• Longest unconquered
  Roman Bürki did not concede a goal in the standings for 660 minutes in the summer of 2012.
  > Hottest contender as record breaker: David von Ballmoos – goalkeeper for heavy favorite YB.
