It is June 28, 2021. Carlos Alcaraz enters his first Wimbledon tournament as number 75. Now, two years later, he is number 1 in the world and can already call himself the winner of the event on the sacred lawn.

The man from Murcia (Sp) has made a rapid rise on the tennis circuit. In four years, the 20-year-old has worked his way up from place 597 (August 2019) to the world top. In 2021, Alcaraz won his first ATP-level tournament on clay in Umag, Croatia.

Five more will follow in 2022, with the highlight in New York when he defeated the Norwegian Casper Ruud (24, ATP 4) in four sets in the final of the US Open. The result: the Spaniard becomes number 1 in the world for the first time.

Won only four matches at Wimbledon before 2023

In a direct duel with Novak Djokovic (36, ATP 2), seven-time Wimbledon winner, he can now successfully defend this position. And most importantly, he gets to lift the trophy with the golden pineapple on it.

A few weeks ago he won his first grass tournament in Queens and at Wimbledon he had only won four games before this year’s tournament. And now he himself is champion on Church Road and can call himself in the same breath as Federer, Djokovic or his idol Nadal.

He celebrated his most impressive triumph to date in the presence of the Spanish King Felipe and the British heir to the throne Prince William and his wife Kate. In short: just a King’s Sunday!
